K1 Garratt Project (3) - Boiler ...

Some time spent cutting up the other Otto loco body to make the body of the boiler & smokebox...

a better solution than plastic pipe. Its now close to the right length, I have a brass dome on order which will fit in the middle of the boiler as per the prototype.

K1 Garratt Project (2) - Footplate pivot prototype...

Trying out a pivoting scheme for the footplate; using a selection of nuts, bolts and washers...

The main pivot, a short bolt fitted into the top of the motion casing....

Washer fitted for smoother pivoting...
Yay its level !
assembled with temporary footplate made from a MDF offcut..
run test with weights...
a check that the footplate is same height as other locos...
mock-up trial fit, better on a level footplate... the boiler is a tad long (I'll have to refer to prototype diagram).
now to make up a list of bits to buy, including some material for the footplate and a suitable piece of plastic pipe for the boiler...

K1 Garratt Project (1) - Basic Mock-up

The two donor locos have been taken apart; I hacked one of the body/cabs up into usable bits - to get a smokebox and funnel and cab.  I tried out a basic assembly with a bit of cardboard for the foot plate and some different diameters of tubing to get a feel for the way things would look....

useful exercise; I need to work out the way the foot plate will pivot on the two 0-4-0 motions.

All bits have been kept in a box, one of the weights will fit in the boiler tube and I found two more square weights in my spare bits which can go in the water tanks at either end.

Project - K1 Garratt Locomotive

One visitor in the summer to a running session, idly suggested I ought to build a Garratt locomotive.

The Garratt K1 0-4-0 + 0-4-0 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/0-4-0%2B0-4-0), looked like the smallest one I could find to have a go at. So I've collected up some reference material.

along with some pictures of 16mm scale live steam models

To build it I've decided to use the motions from two LGB Otto 0-4-0 locos and scratch build the rest (using any bits that I can from Otto locos as well).  The two locos have been bought (looks like I can re-use the funnel and one of the cabs, I'm sure they'll be some other bits too)

So the project is ready to start; firstly I'll have to strip the loco's down to get the motions and work out how to attach a footplate and get them to pivot correctly.

Previous Model Railway layouts (009 and OO/HO)

I made a number of model railway layouts many years back. They have all been dismantled and the rolling stock sold off.

I thought it prudent to upload some pictures and put them online, just in case I forget where I stored them.

Riverdale - 009

Brompton Town - 009

Cranborough OO/HO - 1930's GWR

Cranborough 00/HO - 1970's BR

(change of a few scenic items and run with Western Region BR 'Blue stock')

Lynnmouth 1930's GWR - 00/HO

Wotton End OO/HO - 1930s' GWR

A small wagon repair works by a city branch line terminus. The last layout before I moved up size-wise to modelling in G scale.

the only view of the whole layout I could find - just before I added all the scenic scatter.

th' th' that's all folks...
